AICTE: All technical institutes need to set up incubation centres

AICTE All technical institutes need to set up incubation centres

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has instructed all technical institutes to set up incubation centres so as to support start-up culture and help young entrepreneurs. This move comes in the wake of new norms suggested by the apex body which are to be implemented from the new academic session.

In the recent notification sent across all higher education institutions, including IT and business schools, the AICTE has directed them to arrange “frequent interactions” of students and faculty members with industrialists, entrepreneurs, alumni, and other key stakeholders to inspire students to take up innovative projects that can later be fleshed out into start-ups.

“The organization has laid emphasis on changing times where institutes ranked on academic performance and placement record largely, will also be assessed on the basis of the number of start-ups and entrepreneurs it has produced. This will be an important marker in the time to come,” an AICTE official said.

Other than making incubation centres and industry linkage mandatory, the AICTE has also directed institutions to focus on research work, given the deteriorating quality of journals submitted. Colleges and universities will have to include research in their budgetary provisions to provide financial assistance to researchers. “The thrust has to be given for improving quality of research and development in the Universities/Institutions,” the notification says.

The regulator also claimed, “AICTE recognises that autonomy is pivotal to promoting and institutionalizing excellence in higher education and that the regulatory framework needs to facilitate better performing institutions towards excellence in higher education,” it said. The AICTE has also allowed institutions with a score of more than 750 in the National Board of Accreditation scale, to hire 20 percent foreign faculty from top 500 universities in the world on a contract or tenure basis.
