NEET: Re-exam tentatively scheduled

NEET Re

Owing to the delayed arrival of a train, hundreds of medical and dental seat aspirants from different parts of north Karnataka, were not able to appear for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar tweeted on Monday evening that students who missed the exam owing to train delay would get another chance to appear for it.

According to sources, the re-examination is tentatively scheduled for May 20, when students from Odisha are also likely to appear for NEET.

However, the fate of students, who missed appearing for the exam owing to a last-minute change in the examination centre, is still undecided.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy chaired a meeting with Chief Secretary T.M. Vijay Bhaskar and senior officials of the Department of Higher Education to discuss the issue of students who missed the examination.

Mr. Vijay Bhaskar told The Hindu that the meeting discussed the problems of both categories of students. He also said the Chief Minister had directed officials to raise the issue with the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). B.H. Anil Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Higher Education, said that he had also spoken to the National Testing Agency (NTA) and MHRD officials on students who had missed the exam owing to change in the centre from Presidency School in Yelahanka, Bengaluru, to School of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar University, on Hosur Road.

“We have directed authorities concerned to evaluate how many students missed the exam owing to centre change. If the number of students who missed the exam is large, we will take up their case with NTA. However, NTA authorities stated that if the number of such students is low, the chances of them being allowed for re-examination is less,” he said and claimed that the students had been alerted about the change in exam centres through SMS. However, the students have denied this.

According to Shivanna H., Karnataka State president of “Hindi Nirudyogi Shikshakara Sangha”, whose nephew managed to reach the exam centre on Hosur Road in time, said he stayed back to help arrange transport to ferry students to the Hosur Road centre. “We will take up the case of students who missed the exam they were shattered. If the MHRD and Karnataka government fail to take a favourable decision in the interest of the students future, we will be forced to take legal recourse,” he said.

On the other hand, students such as Shivakumar Chinival from Karatagi taluk in Koppal district are happy that they are getting another chance to appear for the exam. “I’m not taking any chances this time around. I will plan and reach Bengaluru at least two days in advance,” he said.

Meanwhile, the All-India Democratic Students Organisation and People’s Alliance for Fundamental Right to Education-Karnataka have submitted memorandums to the State government on the issue. While blaming the Railway authorities for the delay in Hampi Express reaching the city, they faulted NTA for changing the exam centre at the last minute, without considering the distance. Both organisations have urged the State government to represent the students’ case with the MHRD and ensure that they are allowed to take re-examination when it is conducted for those in Odisha, which was ravaged by cyclone recently.
