IIM Nagpur to incorporate EWS quota, hikes intake to 130 from 120

Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM-N) has decided to incorporate 10% reservation for  Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the general category quota for its 2019 intake. Moreover, it will increase its intake for a 2019-21 batch from 120 to 130. However, IIM-N would admit only 4 students under the new quota from an additional 10 seats.

“We began implementing the scheme by increasing our intake to only 130 for the year 2019-20 on account of infrastructure constraints. However, we will implement the full 10% quota by the following year, 2020-21 in accordance with government guidelines,” said IIMN Director Prof L S Murty.

IIM-N is running from a makeshift campus at Bajaj Nagar-based Visvesvarya National Institute of Technology (VNIT). It plans to shift to a bigger new campus at Mihan-SEZ from next academic year. While the Centre has directed all government undertakings and centrally funded educational institutions to implement this quota under the 124th Amendment Bill, 2019 of the Indian Constitution, standards for the implementation for the same in educational institutes have yet to be formulated.

To facilitate the same, IIM Nagpur has provided shortlisted candidates with a format that allows them to detail their family income and assets, in order to be considered under the EWS quota. Elaborate guidelines for submitting information validated by competent authorities have been conveyed to the candidates. The admission portal on the IIMN website allows candidates to upload the income and assets certificate, while also offering a window to make requisite changes.

The criteria for a candidate to be categorised as economically weaker are in accordance with centrally stipulated directions. Persons who are not covered under the scheme of reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs and whose family has a gross annual income below Rs 8 lakh are to be identified as economically weaker for the benefit of reservation.

Income shall also include income from all sources i.e. salary, agriculture, business, profession, etc. for the financial year prior to the year of application. Also, persons whose family owns or possesses any of the following assets shall be excluded from being identified as EWS, irrespective of the family income: 5 acres of agricultural land and above; the residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. and above; a residential plot of 100 sq. yards and above in notified municipalities; a residential plot of 200 sq. yards and above in areas other than the notified municipalities.
