Allahabad University becomes the first university to offer insurance for its students

Allahabad University authorities have agreed to implement the accidental and health scheme for the students pursuing different courses on its campus after a wait of Six long years.

 

For availing the scheme, which is perhaps one of its kind in any central university of the country, every student will have to pay an amount of Rs 77 following which he or she would be covered under Rs Five lakhs of insurance cover.

 

The scheme has been delayed for the past six years despite the fact that it has been passed by all decision making bodies of the campus

 

Before implementing the scheme, varsity authorities had invited tender for around Five parties interested to extent the scheme.

 

“We found that the rates quoted by New India Insurance was the lowest and it would be providing the insurance cover to the students enrolled at any of the course on the campus”, said dean student welfare (DSW), Prof Harsh Kumar.

 

According to the proposed scheme, students of AU would be paying the money (Rs 77) for getting insured at the time of admission itself. “The fee would restructured in a way that the student is made to pay the amount of the annual premium along with the fee itself after that the student could avail the benefit of the insurance cover”, said the DSW.

He added that under the scheme, if any student meets with any accident etc, he or she would get an amount of Rs Five lakhs in case of death or an injury making him or her permanently disable. However, an amount of Rs 2.5 lakh would be given for treatment for serious injury etc.
