University of Hyderabad bags Institution of Eminence status

The University of Hyderabad (UoH) bagged the Institution of Eminence status by the ministry of human resource development on Thursday along with four other institutions.

 

The University Grants Commission had recommended UoH for grant of IoE status which aims to uplift shortlisted institutions in the top 100-500 world rankings in the next 10 years. Although the announcement was made by the MHRD in New Delhi on Thursday, the UoH is yet to receive the letter of intent.

Under the scheme, the IoE will receive financial assistance of Rs 1,000 crore over a period of five years. Like all other institutions, even the UoH has made elaborate plans on how do they intend to utilize the funds.

 

“The IoE status will definitely help us boost academics and research on campus. Apart from the financial funding, we will be allowed to admit foreign students, offer online courses, etc. We will be entitled to all the privileges that are outlined in the scheme,” said Appa Rao Podile, UoH vice-chancellor.

 

With the IoE status, the UoH is also confident of being able to be listed in one of the top 200 universities in the world in the next five years. Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur which have been awarded the IoE by the MHRD.
