A special entrance test for admission to post graduate (PG) classes in the Gauhati University (GU) affiliated colleges will be held on September 15, after several seats in the colleges were found to be laying vacant following admissions held last month.
Pursuant upon a GU executive council resolution adopted in its meeting held on September 2 and subsequent discussion in the admission committee meeting held on September 6, it was decided to conduct the special entrance test for PG admissions in the colleges affiliated to GU.
Sources in the university said that around 400 PG seats are yet to be filled up in Arabic, Assamese, Bengali, Biotechnology, Commerce, Chemistry, Education, Environmental Management, Geography, History, Master in Tourism Management, Sociology, Herbal Science and Technology, Biophysics and Bodo in the colleges affiliated to GU. It further added that the highest number of vacant seats are in Assamese and commerce subjects.

As the portal for submitting applications opened from Monday, a notification issued by the university said that only those students and applicants will be allowed to sit for the upcoming entrance test who did not apply for the first entrance test conducted from June 29 to July 3 by GU. The portal will be opened from 12 noon on September 9 to September 12, the notification said.
GU had made it compulsory for students, seeking admission to PG courses in colleges affiliated to the university, to appear in a common entrance test (CET) from this year. Though CET was introduced for admission to the PG courses in GU from last year, the colleges were not brought under its ambit.
This year, it was mandatory for all students, who are seeking admission to the postgraduate level in GU and its affiliated colleges, to appear in the CET. But, secretary of university classes at GU, HK Nath said that many students, who were aspiring to pursue PG courses in the colleges, did not appeared in the previously held CET.
“May be they were unaware that all students who wants to join PG courses in the GU affiliated colleges will have to mandatorily appear in the common entrance test from this year. According to reports, many students are approaching the college authorities, seeking admission in PG courses, without appearing in the entrance test. So, we have decided to give them a chance,” said Nath.
