THE Ranking is a black box, says IIT-D director V Ramgopal Rao

IITs want to understand the functioning of these rankings better

Amid the confusion and discontentment regarding Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020, V Ramgopal Rao, director of IIT Delhi, has raised questions on the credibility of the ranking while comparing it with the QS rankings. “THE rankings do not have much credibility. We all are able to understand QS rankings because of their continuous interaction with us, which leads to better transparency. THE is a black box for us,” he said while talking to Education Times.

IIT Bombay has claimed that the institution did not submit the data for 2020 rankings. On the other hand, editor of Times Higher Education, Phil Baty stated that IIT Bombay was well aware of the guidelines that clearly stated the terms and timeline of the rankings.

IIT Delhi on behalf of all the 23 IITs is coordinating a meeting with THE officials. Speaking about THE’s claims regarding conscious submission of data by IIT Bombay for 2020 rankings, Rao said, “We do not know where they are getting the data from. The meeting with THE officials will be held in January and we would be able to understand the functioning of these rankings better.”

Rao had also shared his opinion on various platforms including Facebook and LinkedIn following the THE rankings where he urged that “no negativity should be build based on numbers that are not even put together with enough care and thought”.

He added, “50% of the scores used for ranking are based on perception. QS is at least a lot more transparent to how they generate perception-based scores. Many of us have stopped caring about THE rankings”.
