The UK participated in the India International Science Festival (IISF) 2019 being held in Kolkata from 5-8 November. The UK was represented by Professor John Loughhead, Chief Scientific Advisor, Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), UK Government.
As a part of the event, Professor Loughhead addressed the ‘Overseas Science and Technology Ministers and Diplomatic Conclave’. The conclave was aimed at exchanging ideas and innovative perspectives with partner countries specially for addressing unmet societal needs through application of science and technology. The theme of the conclave was ‘S&T policy as a driver for Social Change/ Socio-economic development’.

He also attended the Mega Science Exhibition organised jointly by the Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Science & Technology and National Council of Science Museums at Science City, Kolkata.
Speaking on the UK-India science and research partnership, Professor Loughhead said: “I am delighted to be in Kolkata for the India International Science Festival 2019. The UK and India are both showing leadership on climate action. The UK has committed itself to achieve the net zero emission target by 2050. We have invested £120m in the Green Growth Equity Fund, a joint venture with Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi’s flagship National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF).

India and the UK are deploying the best of Indian and British talent in science and technology to address priority global challenges. The joint programmes within Newton-Bhabha fund cover a wide spectrum from capacity building to funding research through to translation of research into innovation.”
