UP govt to use AI to moderate exam papers, check leaks

The state government is planning to use artificial intelligence (AI) to develop an automated system for moderation of papers of various examinations and minimize chances of wrong answers and repetition of questions. The new system will eliminate possibilities of human interference and help in preventing question paper leakages in universities and recruitment examinations. Secondary and higher education minister Dinesh Sharma has constituted a three-member committee to look into the issue and submit a report within one month.

The committee comprises of vice-chancellor, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, Prof Vinay Pathak, deputy director (IIT-Kanpur) Prof Manindra Agarwal and vice-chancellor of Siddharth University, Siddharth Nagar, Prof Surendra Dubey.

Talking to TOI, vice-chancellor of APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University Prof Vinay Pathak said: “The committee will work on revamping of examination system by introducing AI-based moderation of question papers. This will cut down on human error or interference in examination process.”

He said once implemented, the new system would end all possibilities of question paper leakage. “Online evaluation will also be made safer through artificial intelligence,” he added.

“Our university uses encrypted question papers which are downloaded at the centres itself. There are others who do not use technology and are vulnerable to discrepancies,” Prof Pathak said. The committee will give suggestions on preparation of question papers, moderation process and use of latest technology to plug loopholes.

An official said the state government would begin implementation of the plan once the committee submits its report.
