After setting up smart classrooms in government colleges, five more will get commerce and economics laboratories and four will get language labs, all at a total cost of approximately Rs 3 crore. These labs will enable teachers to make use of open source educational software to make learning interesting.
Students will be able to play games through which they will learn workings of systems like share market dealings in the commerce and economics lab, officials of the directorate of higher education (DHE) said.
While the commerce and economics labs will come up in the government colleges in Quepem, Margao, Pernem, Khandola and Sakhali, the language labs will be established in the state institutes in Pernem, Khandola, Sakhali and Quepem.
The language lab will have content in Sanskrit, Marathi, Konkani and English, where students can use open source educational software to learn things like articulation, pronunciation, etc, with the help of animations. Vocabulary, for instance, can be improved using a flash card game, DHE deputy director Renji George Amballoor said.

“International standard modular work stations will be provided in the colleges to use the open source educational software. The work of establishing the labs will begin next month. With these labs we are empowering students as well as teachers. In economics, for instance, all the data sets will be available to teachers through these labs using which they can carry out further research,” DHE officials said.
Already, the state government has set up virtual and smart classrooms in government colleges in Quepem, Borda, Khandola and Sakhali at a cost of around Rs 4 crore. Officials said that work order has been issued to set up virtual and smart classrooms in the remaining three government institutes, officials said.
“The smart classrooms have equipment like high definition cameras. Once all colleges have the virtual and smart classrooms, one resource person will be able to deliver a lecture at one institute and it can be watched by students in all the government colleges. The students cannot only watch, but also interact using the equipment with the resource person,” Amballoor said.
Funds allotted by the central government under the Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) were utilised to provide the virtual boards and smart classrooms.
