Universities will now have to seek permission for running a new degree course six months in advance. In a bid to prevent distribution of fake ‘unspecified’ degrees, University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed all varsities to seek prior permissions for new courses.
Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) will also have to seek permission even when it has got autonomy for coming up with new courses after securing an A+ grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The permission is required in case of a course that is not specified under the list of courses of UGC, DAVV media spokesperson Dr Chandan Gupta told TOI.

“The varsities have been instructed to follow Section 22 of UGC Act and can come up with courses that are specified in the list of courses of UGC. If not, permission will be required,” he added.
What is Sec 22 Of UGC Act?
Under Section 22 of UGC Act, 1956, the right of conferring or granting degrees shall be exercised only by a university established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act or an institution deemed to be a University under Section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer or grant degrees.
