Elon Musk says no need for college to learn stuff, repeats that Tesla doesnot need college degrees

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at an event that one doesn’t need to go to college to learn anything and reminded people that Tesla doesn’t need college degrees from employees.

Founder and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla and one of the world’s top innovation leaders at the moment – Elon Musk – said that one doesn’t need to go to college to learn anything. And considering the rise of free online learning sources, the tech mastermind might just be right.

The reason one doesn’t need to college for learning purposes is because “you can learn anything you want for free”, Musk said.

Musk was speaking at the Satellite 2020 conference in Washington DC last Monday.

So then why do we need to go to college?

Elon Musk said that colleges were for “fun and to prove you can do your chores, but they are not for learning.”

He said that the purpose of going to college was something different.

It was to allow them to spend time with peers of same age, and more importantly, discipline the future workforce using “annoying homework assignments”.

Tesla doesn’t need college degrees from potential employees

Musk also said that he would make sure his company Tesla didn’t look for college degrees while hiring people because it was “absurd”.

He feels that the most important requirement in a candidate looking to work in Tesla is his/her “exceptional ability”. But he doesn’t think a college degree is proof of someone possessing this.

He would always go for hiring someone who had done something exceptional before than fixating on whether that person has a degree from a reputed college.

Moreover, during his talk, he also listed the names of other geniuses who dropped out of college but went on to build majestic business empires – Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Larry Ellison.

Not the first time Musk said Tesla doesn’t need college degree

This is not the first time however that Elon Musk has mentioned how Tesla doesn’t need its employees to have a college degree.

His viewpoint had been highlighted in the news in December 2019 as well when he tweeted in agreement to a question by someone who was asking if one still didn’t need a college degree to work in Tesla.

Before this, he had mentioned in a 2014 interview with German publication Auto Bild, that “there’s no need even to have a college degree at all, or even high school” to work in Tesla.

But we need to note also that Elon Musk himself has definitely been to college. He has two bachelor’s degrees in physics and economics and has attended the University of Pennsylvania even though he did drop out of his PhD programme after just two days.
