Dharamveer Singh Chouhan, Co-Founder & CEO, Zostel, Did you know that 60% millennials seek flexible working options? In the wake of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, a significant number of countries, including India, have been placed under lockdown. Companies have asked employees to work from home and have provided them with the necessary tools required to do so. Working from home may seem exciting and like a dream come true, but the excitement may fade away. This would result in boredom and lesser productivity.

For some, it may be tough to adjust to this new way of working due to a variety of reasons such as disturbance from family members, children, household chores, etc. Be mindful of the fact that working from home might prove to be counter-productive if you are not organized. Here are some interesting hacks to make working from home productive.

Create a home office

Your home office needn’t be a fancy one. It just needs to be a space where you can think and focus on your work. Not everyone might have the luxury of a separate room to have a workspace, but any area would work. Although, ensure that the area you choose is suitable with charging points for your computer and phone and keep it as a designated space for yourself. Remember, your bed is not an ideal working spot. The space you work out of needs to be comfortable since most of us work at least 7-9 hours a day.

Organize your thoughts and your workspace

If you are someone who’s organizational skills aren’t up to the mark, now is the perfect time to start practicing. Keep your desk clean, don’t leave food items or empty plates and cups on the table for a long time. When working remotely, it is important to stay organized. De-clutter your mind and your workspace for optimum results. As for family members, explain to them that you need your workspace to be respected.

Treat it like your actual office

It is all about training your mind. Treat your home office as a regular office. Stick to a particular schedule. For most people, the working hours would remain the same so try to follow a routine. Once you wake up, shower and get dressed in neat clothes. Your clothes don’t have to look fancy; they only need to be clean and fresh. Follow your meeting and call schedules and maintain a to-do list to help you keep a track of things.

Take breaks

Too much time looking into the screen is not good for your physical as well as mental health. Isolation time can be hard, especially if you live by yourself. Connect with your friends and family virtually during your break time. Instead of staying glued to your seat, try to take breaks in between to refresh yourself. Try to eat lunch elsewhere instead of your desk. Breaking the monotony can be just what you need at the moment!

Stay healthy

It is commonly said that health is wealth’ and with good reason. With the lockdown, you might not be able to step outside, but you can certainly work to stay healthy within the comfort of your homes. Poor health will impact your productivity and leave you feeling dull. Try to maintain a healthy and balanced diet and get 20-30 minutes of exercise each day. You can simply do a mini work out in your living room or take a brisk walk on your terrace.

It is important to stay safe and also ensure that your work does not get impacted during these challenging times. If we work together, we will be able to recover quickly and let normalcy return sooner than we can imagine.
