Top 10 Universities in India for Higher Education

Students choice of selecting a university abroad depends heavily on the employability opportunities. Every year “The Times Higher Education” releases ranking list for universities around the world. The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators which measure the institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

The list is prepared after compiling answers of several recruiters, chief executives and business managers from top companies in 20 countries.

Indian Institute of Science

Founded in 1909, the Indian Institute of Science (IIS) is situated in Bangalore, the capital of India’s southern Karnataka state.

The university has one undergraduate programme – the bachelor of science (research) degree which lasts four years. All students take modules in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and humanities and there is a strong emphasis on engineering. In the final year students undertake their own research oriented project supervised by an academic. Submission of applications takes place between February and March.

There are also master’s courses in management studies, technology and design as well as PhD programmes. Research students make up more than 70 per cent of the entire student body at IIS.

The university is made up of six main departments: biological sciences, chemical sciences, electrical sciences, interdisciplinary research, mechanical sciences, and physical and mathematical sciences. There are also individual centres for brain research, scientific and industrial consultancy, and sponsored schemes and projects.

Academics at the institute conduct research in several areas of science and technology including space science, material science and engineering, environmental and atmospheric sciences, endocrinology and genetic engineering. The university has also identified three areas for upcoming research: genomics, nano-sciences and mathematics.

More than 75 scholars at the institute have won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB).

The university’s gymkhana – its sports and culture centre – is spread over 26 acres and home to 27 clubs. There is also a health centre for staff, students and their families and, in 2001, the institution established a Centre for Counselling and Support.

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar

First established in 2008, the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) is a state university located in Rupnagar, a city in the region of Punjab, India.

With a primary focus on engineering and science, the institute is part of the wider Indian Institute of Technology system, which are intended to provide high-quality education and research facilities, in mostly STEM subjects, across India.

In IIT Ropar’s case, this includes chemistry and chemical engineering, physics, mathematics, materials engineering and various humanities subjects among others.

The university moved to its current campus site in 2009. Spread out over 525 acres of open space, the campus provides modern facilities for both recreational and academic purposes, including multiple tennis and volleyball courts, a football field and several activity centres. The university also provides a dedicated health centre specifically for students, in addition to university-run buses and student living facilities.

Academically, IIT Ropar maintains a strong focus on research, especially in the fields of physics and artificial intelligence. To this end, the university is home to numerous research labs and specialist equipment, and works hard to establish strong links with industrial partners.

As well as this, the university plays host to a number of annual events and festivals, dedicated to sport, culture and music.

The city of Rupnagar itself is relatively small, and located close to a number of diverse ecological environments. The largest of these is the Ropar Wetland, an artificial lake created in 1952 and is home to a huge variety of birds, fish and mammals.

Indian Institute of Technology Indore

 

Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore or IITI), started in 2009 by the Government of India, is a premier institute that aims at building a new technologically oriented nation and contribute to the ever-expanding horizon of the new world.

Headed by a scientist of national and international stature, Prof Pradeep Mathur, its director; IITI has emerged as an institute that emphasizes on research at its foundational level. IITI, in its short duration of existence of 10 years has emerged as a prominent research cum teaching institute in the country. As an Indian Institute of Technology, IITI is administered centrally by the IITs’ Council, a body especially established by the Government of India.

With an aggressive zeal towards research and innovation, the institution has swiftly achieved the prominence and stature that is demanded of the older IITs. The number of research publications that the institute produces is growing in an exponential fashion, accelerating the SCOPUS h-index of the institution. This is achieved by the resilience and motivation of its faculty members and the nurturing and learning environment that the institute creates for its peers. The institute also places a heavy emphasis on research in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, purposefully involving undergraduate students in the forefront of research projects, in the form of an undergraduate research scheme called Promotion of Research and Innovation for Undergraduate Students (PRIUS).

With numerous sponsored research programmes, the institute houses a couple of prominent research facilities that house state of the art instruments and human resource. These research facilities do not only cater to the academic community of the institution but are used extensively by academic communities and industries from all over the country and abroad.

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

Established in 1958, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay was the first technology institution set up with foreign assistance, with Unesco funds coming directly from the-then Soviet Union.

The institutes of technology were designated by parliament as ‘institutes of national importance’ in 1961 and have since grown in reputation, with IIT Bombay now regarded as one of the top technical universities in the world.

Recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research, the IITB is known for the outstanding calibre of students and has graduated more than 42,000 of India’s top engineers and scientists over the past five decades. As such, the institute is able to attract the very best students from the country for its bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes, as well as recruit internationally respected faculty.

Among its noted staff members include theoretical physicist Dipan Ghosh, computer scientist NK Naik and mathematician Manohar Vartak.

IIT Bombay has also built links with peer universities and institutes, both at the national and the international levels, to enhance research and enrich its educational programmes, while the institute also offers many innovative short-term courses through continuing education and distance education programmes.

Located in Powai, one of the northern suburbs of Mumbai, the residents of the institute are close to the busy financial capital of India, but the institution’s campus known for its natural beauty, as well as its proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, with leopards, panthers and other wild animals occasionally straying onto university grounds.

A fully residential institute, all its students are accommodated in its 15 hostels with in-house dining; the campus also provides excellent sports and other recreational facilities.

The institute’s annual arts, science and cultural festivals are also highly esteemed, with the annual science & technology festival, Techfest, started in 1998, now Asia’s largest science and tech festival.

The annual cultural festival Mood Indigo, also held in the month of December, is the Asia’s largest college cultural festival, drawing influential speakers from all walks of life.

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

Established in 1961 under the Institutes of Technology Act of the same year, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) is a public research university. Under its founding legislation, it was declared to be an Institute of National Importance.

There are nine subject areas in which IITD offers a Bachelor of Technology. These are Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, and Textile Technology.

The university also offers five dual programmes that combine undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as other graduate programmes within the university’s various departments and centres.

IITD comprises11 multi-disciplinary centres as well as three schools of excellence. Its mission is to generate new knowledge and engage in cutting-edge research..

Situated in South Delhi’s affluent Hauz Khas neighbourhood, the IITD campus spans 325 acres and is built to resemble a city of its own, complete with gardens, roads and residential complexes. The campus is divided into four zones, with male and female accommodation in the Student Residential Zone, a Faculty and Staff Residential Zone, the Academic Zone and the Student Recreational Area, comprising a football stadium, cricket ground, basketball courts, a hockey field, swimming pool and tennis courts.

Away from the campus, the university lies in easy reach of several other higher education institutions, as well as national attractions such as the Qutub Minar, the world’s tallest brick minaret, and the Lotus Temple, one of the most visited buildings in the world.

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

The oldest of the Indian Institutes of Technology, founded in 1951, IIT Kharagpur is also the largest and one of the most prestigious.

It is located in Kharagpur, a city with more than 200,000 inhabitants, which lies about 72 miles (116 kilometres) west of Kolkata.

The university has 19 departments, which offer undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, plus a number of specialist centres of excellence. The departments mainly cover science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, but IIT Kharagpur also offers courses in humanities and social sciences.

It has an extension centre in Kolkata, which offers continuing education programmes, and distance learning courses.

The institute is fully residential, with students accommodated in halls of residence on campus, and it also boasts a central library with about 300,000 volumes on its shelves.

IIT Kharagpur is one of the few educational institutions in the world to be based in a former prison, occupying the site of the Hilji Detention Camp, which the British colonial regime used to detain independence campaigners.

The institute started its life with 224 students and 42 academics in the buildings of the prison camp, before the present campus, which covers 2,100 acres, was laid out under the guidance of the Swiss architect Werner Moser.

The motto of IIT Kharagpur is “Yoga Karmashu Kaushalam”, which literally translates to “Excellence in action is yoga”; meaning that doing your work well is true yoga.

The city of Kharagpur is notable for having the third-longest railway platform in the world, stretching to 1,073 metres.

Institute of Chemical Technology

Formed in 1933 as the Department of Chemistry and Technology of the University of Bombay (now Mumbai), the Institute of Chemical Technology achieved autonomy from the big city giant in 1994 and took its current name at the same time as attaining university status in 2008.

Based on a 16-acre campus in the district of Maturya, it also has sites at Jalna, Marothwada and, since 2018, Bhubaneswar. Offering courses in chemical engineering, chemical technology and pharmacy, its motto tells students that “your right is to selflessly perform the work”.

Numerous laurels include being one of the few Indian universities with master’s courses accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry and an A++ rating conferred in 2017 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. In the 2018 National Institutional Ratings Framework it was ranked fourth for pharmacy, 10th for engineering, 19th among universities and 30th overall.

It reckons to produce around 10 per cent of India’s 1,000 chemistry PhDs each year and has a longstanding research tradition – a survey from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2012 rated it fourth in the world in chemistry research and suggested that that status dated back to the 1970s.

Departments include the Institute of Dyestuffs Technology, dating back to 1944 and joint host with the Dyestuffs Manufacturers Association of India of biennial “Conventions of Coloration” conferences.

Recent research findings by researchers at the university include a chemical agent which will aid the biodegradation of plastics and a gelatine-based tissue which heals deep wounds and cuts quicker and faster than the collagen-based products currently in use. Current projects include the Centre for Excellence in Cellular Agriculture, due to open in 2020 and devoted to the creation of potentially revolutionary plant and cell-derived meat.

Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar

The Indian Institute of Technology Ghandinagar (IIT Ghandinagar) is a public research university located in the city of Ghandinagar, capital of the Indian region of Gujarat.

The university was established via an act of Parliament in 2008, alongside a number of other Indian Institute of Technology campuses. These universities are intended to provide high-quality educational and research facilities for the next generation of Indian STEM students.

IIT Ghandinagar began construction of a new campus on 400 acres of land along the banks of the Sabarmati river in 2012, with classes starting in July 2015.

As such, IIT Ghandinagar is able to boast of a wide range of modern academic and recreational facilities, including specialist science labs, sport facilities, student medical centres, six student-managed accommodation blocks and numerous canteens and student restaurants.

The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across a number of STEM subjects, including civil and chemical engineering, computer science, materials science, chemistry and cognitive science.

The city of Ghandinagar is named for its most famous inhabitant, Indian independence activist Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in the city.

Ghandinagar has a large and closely-knit community, with a great deal to offer the student population. The city is known as one of the greenest in India, with a large amount of tree cover.

The state of Gujarat, where Ghandinagar is located, lies on India’s western coast, with the city being located on the banks of the Sabarmati River in the state’s north-west.

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering and basic and applied research. Since its establishment, the institute has played a vital role in providing technical manpower and know-how to the country. The institute has contributed to all sectors of technological development. The institute offers bachelor’s degree courses in 12 disciplines of engineering and architecture, and postgraduate degree in 53 disciplines of engineering, applied science, architecture and planning. The institute has facilities for doctoral work in all its departments and research centres. The institute admits students to B.Tech. and B.Arch. courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) of IITs conducted at various centres all over India. In recent times, the institute has been actively engaged in 219 research projects and 570 industrial cooperations, many of which are of national interest, for example, the development of small and micro hydropower projects, solar water heating systems, seismological and ground motion studies, RFID and censor networks, the Rural Technology Action Group, and the development of projects on the River Brahamputra.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

Amrita University is a multi-disciplinary private institution, located across five campuses (Coimbatore, Amritapuri, Bengaluru, Kochi, Mysore) in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. A young university, it was founded in 2003. In its sixth year, it became the youngest institution to be credited ‘A’ by the National Assessment Accreditation Council, India’s higher education institution assessment body – which requires an institution to have been in operation for a minimum of five years. At 900 acres and eight million square feet built-up space, Amrita is India’s largest private institution. Its 18,000 students are overseen by over 1,700 faculty.

Its main Coimbatore campus in Tamil Nadu sprawls over 400 acres and is often likened to an “oasis in a desert”. Tree-planting and forestation activities have altered barren land into a lush learning environment. Its eight student hostels accommodate over 3,500 people, with students expected to stay there for the duration of their course. Sports facilities are plentiful on campus with the focal point being the 22,000 square metres of sports field and Olympic standard swimming pool.

Amritapuri campus is nestled in the picturesque village of Vallikavu, across the backwaters of Kerala, and spread over 80 acres. Bengaluru campus houses Amrita’s business school and the School of Engineering, where curriculum is framed with extensive industry input.  Kochi campus is the site for the 1450 bed super-speciality hospital. Annual patient turnover exceeds 450,000 outpatients and nearly 40,000 inpatients. Mysore campus is located in a peaceful area, and offers state-of-the-art -art facilities with a serene ashram and temple atmosphere.

Research is a significant part of Amrita’s output and it is a partner in various international bilateral governmental research programmes and initiatives. It has links with 20 US universities for research into areas such as cyber security, and further associations with European and Japanese institutions.
