IIT-Guwahati offers online courses beyond boundaries

Going beyond the IIT system during the coronavirus lockdown, IIT Guwahati (IIT-G), through its E&ICT Academy aims to empower the scientific community by imparting online courses (both short term and long duration), free three months long online summer internships, interactive sessions, and webinars.

Even as the course contents by IIT-G have been framed primarily for the benefit of its students and the details of these programmes can be found at the website of E&ICT Academy of IIT-G, sources in the premier technology institute said that students and academia from other central and state universities will also be able to reap the benefits of these online courses.

With the coronavirus lockdown entering third phase, the premier technology institute is continuing its online classes for all the theory courses (more than 350) and aims to complete them by May 15. An IIT-G statement issued on Monday said that the annual progress seminars, synopsis and viva-voce examinations of PhD students are also being conducted on an online mode to continuously monitor their progress as well as ensure that this unexpected lockdown does not delay their career growth.

“Foundations of the online courses prepared by IIT-G is similar to the courses taught in other universities. So this online platform of IIT-G will benefit students from other universities,” said a senior official of IIT-G.

Since its inception in 2015 and inauguration in 2016, E&ICT Academy, IIT-G has empowered more than 9,000 participants consisting of, faculty members, students and industry personnel through over 200 courses conducted in 15 states nationwide in diverse areas such as communication engineering, VLSI, data science, IoT, cloud computing, big data analytics, high performance computing and ICT in teaching amongst others.

The e-classroom facilities existing at the Centre for Educational Technology (CET) in IIT-G are being used for recording lectures on various subjects, student-teacher interactions, and interactions with remote students through video conferencing systems. These lectures are later edited for redistribution. In addition, the CET, has three recording studios for recording the video content of various projects.

For the delivery of lectures the CET has also developed a new video conferencing room having the features 9+1 Nodes, Full HD video quality and is Connected via NKN. The virtual class room that is housed at the CET is frequently used to record lectures on various subjects, student-teacher interactions, and interactions with remote students through video conferencing systems. These lectures are later edited for redistribution.

CET administers mission projects by collaborating and interacting with other IITs and education department of various states. Besides, the CET which hosts world class state-of-the-art infrastructures has executed several mission projects spanning all the subject areas of science, engineering and humanities while infusing educational and pedagogical technologies.

“IIT Guwahati is thriving very hard to utilize all the online facilities available to ensure seamless integration of knowledge and delivery by achieving maximum synergy between Education, Human Development and Technology through Collective Research, Design & Development of educational / pedagogical content, Educational technology and Collaborative Interdisciplinary team work. These initiatives will ensure that the students do not suffer from this lockdown and their academic career is not sacrificed,” read the IIT-G statement.
