Introduce MCQ pattern, reduce exam hours: UGC

While the University Grants Commission (UGC) has advised the universities and colleges to either mark students based on internal assessments or reduce the exam duration from three to two hours, universities are mulling over conducting online examinations amid coronavirus outbreak. Several universities have also expressed an aversion towards results based on internal assessments. Venugopal KR, VC, Bangalore University, such assesment will not be fair on students as one cannot predict one’s potential based on previous performances.

“If the situation permits, we would conduct exams in normal mode where we will create several exam centres across the city and small batches of students will be allowed to appear in shifts,” he said. However, if the situation does not normalise, then the university will resort to online examination with virtual supervision. “We might also introduce multiple-choice questions (MCQ) pattern for easy conduction and evaluation of answer sheets,” he added.

The Central University of Gujarat (CUG) will tentatively conduct the semester exams in July. The university has been conducting science practical sessions using online stimulated experiments and would use similar methods for exams.
