The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) has offered a gap year for students who are not comfortable with the current system of classes going completely online. They must, however, complete the course within the maximum permitted time of eight years.
“This is the first time we are alerting students on the gap-year option, which was always there. For various reasons, a few students have expressed concerns that the current situation is not working well for them. We need to watch how many will avail it,” said vice-chancellor Sudhir Krishnaswamy.

The students must inform their choice to the office by August 15 and can remain on the rolls by paying a fee of Rs 2,500. The law school has increased fee by 5% for the fresh batch of students, besides increasing the intake from 80 to 120. There is a 10% increase in the number of applications for Common Law Admission Test 2020, the gateway to admissions to NLSIU and other premier law schools.
University officials said the institution was in a crisis with the state government not releasing funds in the first quarter. Source said the fund was recently slashed by 75% to Rs 50 lakh. The college is preparing its hostels to follow the social-distancing norms by changing the occupancy rules: Rooms shared by three students will now have two students, and rooms for two students will house one student.
