Talking Point Can NEET be waived off for admissions to foreign or Indian medical colleges

NEET doctor medical

As medical admissions close in a few countries, students are restless over the constant deferment of NEET and many are demanding the exam to be scapped for admissions abroad

Time sensitive decision

The Supreme Court has directed MCI to consider the plea of students seeking NEET waiver for MBBS admissions abroad. However, it is a time sensitive matter as many colleges abroad are soon closing the admission process. Students will benefit from an early decision. Several NRI students are also facing this challenge to seek admissions in India due to travel restrictions, as they are required to appear for the entrance in India itself. The exemption can be considered as a one-time measure in limited for 2020.

Waiver may be considered

NEET was introduced for quality control in the field. However, one-time waiver can be looked into as students who pursue MBBS abroad have to appear for the Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) to attain license for practice in India. However, NEET exam is not the only challenge for students this year as there is still no certainty about resumption of international flights or the COVID-19 scenario in other countries.

Relaxed criteria

In some courses including pharmacy where the regulatory bodies have allowed admissions without mandatory entrance examination criteria, the admissions have now begun based on class XII performance. This is for Undergraduate (UG) to Postgraduate (PG) courses except for medicine. For admission in the medicine courses, the decision can only be taken at the governmental level or by MCI.

Alternative should be explored

It is a policy decision that can only be taken by the regulatory body. However, admission without NEET will require standardization of board marks as all state board do not have the same yard stick for evaluation. Also, NEET dates have now been announced. Due to the ongoing situation there is a lot of obscurity.
