In a move against cancellation of exam arrears of students, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has warned Anna University that it would be constrained to withdraw the approval to varsity if the arrears are cancelled as proposed by the Tamil Nadu government.
The government has announced that all students with arrears (except final semester) who have registered and paid fees for exams will be exempted from writing exams and they will be promoted.

There are currently 4,01,226 engineering students with arrears in the state. “Of the two lakh students who set to receive degrees without clearing exams, one lakh have finished college,” university officials said.
Experts warned that cancelling arrear exams would bring down the value of hard earned degrees students.
AICTE chairman Anil D Sahasrabudhe wrote a letter to Anna University vice-chancellor MK Surappa on this issue.
“It is surprising that final year degree students who had failed in various courses in the earlier semester have been passed without conducting examination. It is not acceptable to award marks without conducting any examination and graduating students. Such students will not be recognised by the industry or any other university for higher education,” AICTE chairman said in the letter.

Anna University former vice-chancellor E Balagurusamy welcomed the action from AICTE and urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to take such a strong view.
“Only Anna University comes under AICTE. The UGC should take a serious action because the reputation of more than 10 state universities is facing threat by cancelling arrears.
The move to cancel the arrear exams would ensure that at least two lakh students without basic understanding in key subjects become engineers in the state, professors said. Students with one arrear to 62 arrears would clear them all if the decision is implemented and it would bring down the value of lakhs of hard earned degrees, they said.
However, state higher education minister KP Anbalagan told reporters that the higher education department has not received any letter from AICTE.
