IIT Delhi Launches New B.Tech Course in Engineering and Computational Mechanics

A new undergraduate programme, Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech) in Engineering and Computational Mechanics has been launched by IIT-Delhi for the fresh batch of 2020-2021. Launched on 23rd September 2020, the undergraduate programme will be run by the Department of Applied Mechanics from the academic session 2020-21.

The B.Tech in Engineering and Computational Mechanics aims to expose the students to recent industry-relevant trends in computational techniques and experiments. As per an official statement by IIT Delhi, “This course will ensure a strong grounding in the fundamentals of engineering mechanics along with the tools to address the various areas such as biomechanics, nano-mechanics, constitutive modeling at Multiple Length and Time Scales, parallel processing for mechanics problems, machine learning, artificial intelligence in Mechanics. They can more learn classical aspects like theoretical and experimental mechanics and also the latest in computational techniques including Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The students who choose for this programme will be able to analyze complex interdisciplinary phenomena relevant to the existing as well as upcoming problems in industry and cutting edge research through experimentation, analysis and computation.”

This noble initiative by IIT Delhi has been welcomed and appreciated by students, parents, and many educationalists as well. According to Prof. Sanjeev Sanghi, HoD, Applied Mechanics, “The graduates of this programme are likely to find the best technical jobs in core engineering and will also be very appropriate candidates for higher studies such as master’s and PhD in IIT-Delhi as well as other leading national and international educational institutions. Based on the consultation with industry the undergraduate programme has been designed to create more opportunities for students in Design, analysis and research jobs across various sectors such as defence, aerospace, automotive, shipping, bio-mechanics and bio-medical devices, off-shore structures and many more.

The IIT JEE Advanced entrance exam by IIT-Delhi is scheduled to be held on the upcoming September 27. This year, more than 1.6 lakhs of students have registered to appear for the exam which is considered to be the lowest in the past three years. JEE Advanced exam is conducted for those who have qualified JEE Mains examination. Those who will qualify JEE Advanced can take admission in different IITs of the country. Meanwhile, the Director of IIT Delhi has clarified that the decision to enhance the number of attempts for JEE Advanced would be taken in the JAB or Joint Admission Board’s meeting where all matters in regards to IIT JEE or JEE Advanced 2021 would be taken. He made this clarification after many students approached him with requests to increase the number of attempts in this pandemic situation.
