Jamia Millia Islamia starts refresher course in Geography and Environmental Studies

The UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC), Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) in association with Department of Geography of the university began its 18th (1st online) two-week refresher course in Geography and Environmental Studies from November 9-24, 2020 for training and skill building of more than 80 young faculty members from different universities and colleges across India.

The inaugural session started on November 09,2020, with a welcome address by Prof. Anisur Rahman, Director, UGC- HRDC, JMI. Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, JMI was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session which was attended by the Guest of Honour & Keynote Speaker Prof. Ajit Mishra, Director, Institute of Economic Growth, Dr. R. S. Rawal, Director, G.B.Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment & Sustainable Development, Prof. Anisur Rahman, Director, UGC- HRDC, JMI, Prof. Mary Tahir, Head of the Department, Geography, JMI, faculty members of the Department of Geography,JMI and participants from different colleges and universities.

During her inaugural address, Prof. Najma Akhtar underlined the significance of the refresher course on Environmental Studies for the participants. She congratulated the UGC-HRDC and Department of Geography, JMI for organizing this important programme and impressed by the theme entitled ‘Spatiality and Sustainability for an Inclusive Future’. She stressed that incorporating geographical, economic, social and environmental equity and justice are critical for an inclusive and resilient human society.

The first keynote address was delivered by Prof. Ajit Mishra, Director, Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), New Delhi who emphasized upon the challenges elated to inclusive growth, shared prosperity and vulnerabilities.

The second keynote address was delivered by Prof. R.S. Rawal, Director, G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development, Almora, Uttarakhand, who emphasized upon integrating spatial considerations in rural transformation in the context of Indian Himalayas.

Distinguished Research Scientist, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Vienna, Austria who underscored the application of GAINS model for integrated policy design and impact evaluation with reference to air quality management both globally and locally.

The second special invited lecture was delivered by Prof. Rana P.B. Singh, Department of Geography, Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi(BHU), who highlighted the inclusive heritage ecology of place and UN-SDGs towards future. He called for promoting eco-literacy for sustainable and building resilient societies.

Over the next two weeks, expert speakers from 19 academic and research institutions spread across India and abroad shall train and equip young faculty about emerging concepts, innovative technological solution and applications to address the emerging global issues and challenges with locally sensitive solutions.

Dr. Praveen Kumar Pathak and Dr. Taruna Bansal of the Department of Geography,JMI are the Coordinators of this two-week course.
