UGC issues guidelines regarding online courses, allows universities to offer 40% Semester courses through SWAYAM

University Grants Commission, UGC has notified that the universities across India can now offer up to 40% of the semester courses online. The credit framework for online learning courses can be provided through Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds, SWAYAM. Earlier, UGC had allowed universities for online courses only up to 20%.

One of the tweets from UGC stating this reads, “University Grants Commission (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) Regulations, 2021 have been notified in the Gazette of India. Regulations may be seen in the notification”.

  1. The schedule of the SWAYAM online credit courses will be equivalent to the conventional semester commencing in the month of January and July.
  2. The SWAYAM based online credit courses will be provided through the Host Institution. This will issue the certificate with grades after the end term proctored examination for credit transfer.
  3. The higher education institution may allow only up to forty percent of the total semester courses, through the online credit course, on the SWAYAM platform.
  4. The academic council must expedite the process of transfer of credit earned by the student at their parent institution.
  5. The parent college shall designate a faculty member to guide the students from registration until completion of the credit course.

In the UGC notification, it is further mentioned that, “The parent institution shall give the equivalent credit weightage to the student earned via online learning credit courses through SWAYAM platform, in the credit plan of the program.”

UGC allows universities to offer up to 40% of semester courses through SWAYAM with proper guidelines.
