UGC asks varsities to take lead in creating awareness

Bhubaneswar: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked varsities and colleges affiliated to them to create awareness among people about the pandemic and Covid-appropriate behaviour through their websites and other medium.

“It is a cause of great concern that we are faced with rising cases throughout the country. We have decided to focus on a five-fold strategy to death with the situation. These are testing, tracing, treatment, Covid-appropriate behaviour (CAB) and vaccination. Higher educational institutions are expected to play a lead role in spreading awareness with a renewed emphasis on ‘dawai bhi, kadai bhi,” UGC secretary Rajnish Jain wrote in the letter to vice-chancellors and college principals.

He requested the heads of the higher educational institutions, their faculty, students and staff to spread awareness about CAB through their websites and other publicity mediums. Messages about CAB may be tweeted with the hashtag #Unite2FightCorona, he added.

The UGC has also asked the institutions to urge people to avoid large gatherings and maintain social distancing. “They should be advised not to touch their mouths, noses and eyes and maintain general hygiene. People should wash their hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitiser. They should always keep their mouths covered with masks. Anybody with signs and symptoms (cough, fever and difficulty in breathing) should call the state helpline number or the national toll-free helpline 1075 for any queries,” read the advisory

Last year also, the commission had issued a Covid advisory to the universities and colleges to prevent Covid-19 on their campuses.
