Salem Government Arts College at the Maravaneri area is the oldest higher education center in Salem District. It was improved as an Anglo-Vernacular School in 1857 by A.J. Alexander Arbuthnot. In the same year, it was converted into a district school (Zillah high school). Then 195 students studied in that school. The school was accommodated in a rented building till 1863 when it moved to its own building, The college offers 17 UG and 16 PG courses. 10 Departments offer Research studies both M.Phil and Ph.D. Well Qualified teachers in pursuit of knowledge train students academically. They are made energetic by physical training given to them by athletics and sports. They are made to do service to society through NSS, NCC, and YRC.
