Alleging that the Jadavpur University (JU) administration has succumbed to the pressure of a section of students, the teachers of the varsity’s engineering department on Tuesday said that they would boycott the examination process if the university chooses to hold it online for final semester students.
“Earlier, it was decided that all the exams will be held offline. Following the students’ protests, the university is learnt to have reversed its decision and said the final year semester exams will be held online. Under such circumstances, we have decided to boycott the online exam process. We feel that real evaluation of papers cannot be made if the exams are held online,” Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) general secretary Partha Pratim Roy told The Indian Express.
A section of engineering students had gheraoed JU Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das for 10 hours on Monday to press their demand. The JU chapter of All Bengal University Teachers’ Association (ABUTA) also said that they would boycott the examination process if the decision to hold the exam offline is reversed by the JU administration.
“Our teachers will also not take part in the examination process if it is conducted online,” said ABUTA spokesperson Goutam Maity.
However, Vice-Chancellor Das on Tuesday reiterated that the university examination board’s decision of holding the exams offline is final and would not be reversed. “We will not give in to such demands of the students. I have told them categorically during the gherao that the examination will be held offline,” he said.
FETSU is yet to comment on the issue.
