‘IIT Gandhinagar Students are Now Getting Higher Offers’: IIT GN Director

The average salary offered to undergraduate students at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has been seeing a spike since 2021 as recruiters have returned to premier engineering institutes after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The average salary offered to the 2023 batch of nearly 175 undergraduate students was 34 per cent higher than what was offered in 2022, which was 27 per cent higher than what was offered in 2021. However, the IITGN has a policy of not disclosing the average salary in numbers.

As per the data maintained by the Career Development Services (CDS) office at IITGN, in 2020, 2021 and 2022, the average package has seen an increase by 10 per cent, 27 per cent and 34 per cent respectively.

Professor Mithun Radhakrishna, head of CDS, said, “The number of companies that recruited saw an increase of 27 per cent in the class of 2022 compared to 2021. We have already crossed the figure of last year and are having four more months before the cycle concludes. We are confident of a better trend this year.”

Companies now prefer to visit the campus for recruitment in an offline process. The nearly 20 per cent offline placements last year has doubled this year.

The number of placements also increased by 13 per cent in 2022 compared to 2021 and a similar increase is expected for 2023 batch as the placement process will continue till July.

On IITGN’s policy of not disclosing the salary, IITGN director professor Rajat Moona told The Indian Express, “The top salary component is a very distorted view. Only one per cent might be getting a package of Rs 1 crore and the average might be Rs 8 lakh. Our concern is about not giving a lopsided view to the public… When you give a very high positive projection, people will have high aspirations and when they don’t get it, in some sense it is not right.”

Adding that top recruiter comparison in terms of salary and numbers will be different, Moona said, “For example, one of the top IT MNCs might be recruiting 4-5 candidates but another leading IT company might be recruiting 250 candidates. But in terms of repute and package, the one taking 4-5 students is better. It again becomes a lopsided view when we say the latter is our top recruiter. At the same time, a private institute comes up and say that leading IT company is their top recruiter, too. What is IITGN offering then? The difference is that their top recruiter is probably one or two companies but for us, top recruiters may be many.”

Information technology, finance, analytics, engineering and technology are among the leading sectors recruiting students from IITGN this year. Some of the recruiters this year include Accenture Japan, Amazon, Cred, DE Shaw, Rippling, Salesforce, Texas Instruments and Zomato. The IITGN, founded in 2008, and is among the newer institutes.

The new recruiters this year are Accenture Japan Ltd, Adobe, CoinDCX, Dreamplug Technologies Private Limited (CRED), EY GDS, General Aeronautics Pvt Ltd, Goods And Services Tax Network, Media.net, NAVI Technologies Limited, Nike India Technology, Rakuten Mobile, Inc. Japan, Rippling and Salesforce.

According to Saumil Shah, career development officer at IITGN, “The placements at IITGN are a continuous process across nine months, starting from October that goes on till the convocation in July.”

The institute has registered around 80 per cent of the total batch strength to appear for placements as some prefer to go for higher studies, some take the entrepreneurial path while some prefer to take a break, prepare for UPSC or GATE exams, added Shah.
