The Educational Testing Service (ETS) today introduced some changes in the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Beginning this September, the time duration of the GRE exam will be shortened. According to the recent changes brought in by ETS, the GRE General Test will take less than two hours to complete – roughly half the time of the current test.
ETS claims that the revision of the time duration of the GRE has now made it the shortest test among top graduate, business, and law school admissions.
The revised test format has a few more changes in the entrance test. ETS has now removed the “Analyze an Argument” task in the Analytical Writing section, number of questions in the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections has been reduced and the unscored section has also been dropped.
Just like TOEFL, now test takers can expect to receive their official scores within 8-10 days. A similar reduction in test duration was made for TOEFL too, recently, which is also hosted by ETS.
“These changes mark the first of several planned future updates to the GRE General Test, all of which are intended to provide test takers with a better experience that values their time and reduces anxiety and fatigue,” an official release by the ETS stated.
Recently the data had also shown that India has almost caught up with the US in the number of students taking the gateway exam for pursuing a Master’s or doctorate in America. Data showed that the number of Indian students taking the GRE increased from 56,782 in 2012-2013 to 114,647 in 2021-2022, and nearly half the test takers last year came from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana alone.
