What is the RSTMH Small Grants Program 2019?

The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) invites applications for RSTMH Small Grants Program 2019 which aims to enable early career researchers and global health professionals in the field of tropical medicine or global health to undertake clinical or scientific research or fieldwork as stand-alone projects or distinct elements within a larger project. The selected candidate is awarded a grant worth GBP 5000.

The Royal Society of Tropical Disease and Hygiene (RSTMH) is offering this grant.


Who can apply for this scholarship?

To be eligible, the applicants must:

  • Be early career researchers or global health professionals from anywhere across the globe
  • Have a clear research plan
  • Ideally, be affiliated to an organization or employed (though others will be considered too)
  • Demonstrate limited alternative sources of funding
  • Have adequate supervision
  • Have the appropriate insurance to carry out the research
  • Hold a registered bank account
  • Be an RSTMH member (non-members can also apply but they must join RSTMH upon selection)
  • Not be an RSTMH small grant recipient in the last two years
  • Submit only one application


What are the benefits?

The selected candidates will be awarded grant worth GBP 5000 (including VAT).

Small grants can be used for the following expenditure: 

  • Travel
  • Accommodation
  • Consumables
  • Field expenses, including salaries or per diems
  • Field transport
  • Items of equipment or software

What are the selection criteria?

The applications will be assessed and selected based on the following criteria:

  • Originality and the potential to make a contribution to this area of work
  • The feasibility of project design and methodology
  • Resource and cost-effectiveness
  • Potential to provide career progression to the applicant

The deadline for submissions (including references) is Monday 15 April at midnight GMT.

A. The grant applications are open from Friday 8 February 2019.

A. The deadline for applications (including the references) is midnight GMT on 15 April 2019. 

Q. How much is the small grant for?

A. The grant is up to GBP 5000 including VAT. 

Q. When does the money get paid? 

A. The money is expected to be paid from July 2019, but it does somewhat depend on the number of applications received. 

Q. What can the grant be used for?

A. The grant must be used to carry out research. To do this, the applicant can spend it on a number of things including travel, consumables, field transport, accommodation etc. 

Q. Can I use a small grant to undertake a course of study?

A. No, the grant cannot be used to undertake any course of study.


Terms and Conditions

Applications focused on the thematic areas listed in RSTMH’s five-year strategy will be prioritized. These are listed below:

  • Neglected tropical diseases, with a particular focus on their overlap with non-communicable diseases and the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Malaria, with a particular focus on drug resistance.
  • One Health and wider planetary health.
  • The consideration of human health alongside animal health, and the environment, in the context of social, economic and political factors.
  • Topical issues including, but not limited to, emerging diseases.
  • Drug-resistant infections.
