Workshop on universal acceptance for Devanagari script held by IAMAI

A workshop on Universal Acceptance (UA) for Devanagari Script was held at the C-DAC Innovation Park by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on Friday. The workshop was a part of IAMAI’s ongoing campaign to make local Indian scripts easily accessible on the internet.

Officials stated that the campaign is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The workshop was co-hosted by CDAC Gist, eChai, GDG Pune and Headstart.

“UA is a foundational requirement for a multilingual Internet, one in which users around the world can navigate entirely in local languages. Accessibility of local Indian language content over the internet will boost e-commerce and local businesses resulting in greater internet penetration and usage in the country,” officials from IAMAI stated.

They stated that the objective of such workshops is to reach out to internet businesses, developers and start-up community to create awareness about the criticality of UA and the technical solutions being developed while also promoting Indian languages.

The workshop saw a seminar, a tutorial on UA coding tools and a coding challenge. “Local developers competed in the coding challenge. The responses from local developers, start-up and student community has been amazing. This was the 5th workshop of the kind and UA workshops will be held next in Patna and Ranchi. We look forward to good participation of start-ups, developers, coders and other stakeholders in the upcoming workshops as well,” the officials explained.
