In a major relief to medical aspirants NTA has declared on Monday that there will only be one exam (NEET) for admission to all medical colleges across the country, including AIIMS and JIPMER, which till last year had their own entrance examination. The move has brought cheers among the medical students, parents and the academicians of Tricity, they are also worried about the difficulty level as some feel the paper might be difficult. The notification for NEET entrance 2020 was made public on Monday.
The NTA has stated that, “Section 14 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 provides for holding of a common and uniform National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to the undergraduate medical courses in all medical institutions including those governed under any other law. Thus, the admission to MBBS course in AIIMS, New Delhi, JIPMER and all AIIMS like Institutions will be made through NEET. The eligibility criteria applicable to appear in NEET (UG) shall also be applicable to the candidates desirous to take admission to Institutes of National Importance (INIs) like AIIMS.”
Gurjinder Sandhu, a medical aspirant, presently a class XII student said, “I feel happy but nervous at the same time because I am not sure if this would mean enhanced difficulty level.”
Nupur Bisht, another aspirant said, “It is a major relief to know that we don’t have to sit through multiple entrance tests and run around separately for different institutions. But I wish this notification had come a little earlier.”
Dr Arvind Goyal, NEET Trainer shared, “The decision by the government to hold a single entrance exam ,NEET,is widely appreciated by the Medical aspirants and their parents. It has relieved a lot of stress for the students. Now the real purpose of NEET being a single exam for all medical admissions all over the country will be achieved and all students will be on a level playing field. Moreover, a common counselling will further streamline the process and save the hassle for the parents and students to keep filling in options and forms on different websites and keep track of different timelines or run around to attend the various counsellings in person.”
“It will further prevent the menace of seat blocking and this will benefit the meritorious students. Unlike NEET, the pattern of the AIIMS exam included questions based on Logical Reasoning and General knowledge and the level and style of the questions was more difficult. Moreover 60 questions based on Reason Assertion made the paper even more difficult and added to the stress of the students. The students needed to take extra help to prepare for this style of paper. Students belonging to a rural background or those who cannot afford extra coaching classes stood at a disadvantage in this exam,” he added.
Kunal Singh, another NEET trainer from city shared, “The move will benefit the students and cut down on harassment and stress that goes into preparing for multiple entrance exams.”
