Nitte University to offer M.Sc in Marine Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology of the union government has approved Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) to offer M.Sc in Marine Biotechnology.

NITTE (Deemed to be University) is accredited with “A” Grade by NAAC, ranks 70 amongst the top Universities in the NIRF Ranking, placed in the 451-500 Rank band in the Asia-University ranking and in the 56-60 Rank band in QS India University Ranking.

Prof. Indrani Karunasagar, Director, NUCSER, said, the M.Sc Marine Biotechnology course is an interdisciplinary programme covering Marine Bioresource Bioprospecting , Drugs from the sea, Marine Microbiology, Cell and Developmental Biology, toxicology, Genomics and Proteomics, Aquaculture, Bioprocess technology and Marine Environment protection. The course aims to deliver appropriate laboratory and communication skills for technology development and implement the need of the economy through entrepreneurship, study the marine environmental systems and fisheries, support the industrial sector by promoting the relevant applications and development of marine biotechnological processes, train and empower youth to develop sustainable methods of harnessing the marine environment for food, medicines and other resources. NUCSER has excellent infrastructure facilities with well equipped state-of-the-art laboratories and sufficient teaching and supporting staff. It offers UG, PG and PhD programs, keeping in tune with the emerging trends for career in industry, research and academics.

The admission for DBT supported M.Sc. Marine Biotechnology Course is through a National level Entrance Test. The Regional Centre for Biotechnology, New Delhi, will conduct the Graduate Aptitude Test – Biotechnology (GAT-B) for admission to all the DBT supported PG programme in Biotechnology in the country. The GAT-B examination centres will be spread across the country. The examination will be a Computer Based test. Based on the rank, the candidate will be allotted to the PG programme they have applied for in participating institutions. DBT will sponsor in NUCSER all the 10 students with a national fellowship of Rs. 5,000/- per month. The continuation of the fellowship for the second year is subject to the satisfactory performance of the student.

The online registration for the GAT-B is open and registration will close on June 18, 2020. The online examination is scheduled on June 30, 2020.
