Over 9.64 Lakh Vacancies in Central Government jobs: Overview of Vacancies

Here is an overview of the current job scenario in the Indian government, detailing the number of vacancies in various sectors, including civil services, home ministry, railways, and the total number of vacancies across all government departments.

The Indian government has over 40 lakh sanctioned posts, with more than 30 lakh employees and over 9.64 lakh posts currently vacant. This information was revealed in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha during the monsoon session of 2023.

CIVIL SERVICES VACANCIES

In the civil services sector, there are 1,365 vacancies in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and 703 in the Indian Police Service (IPS). Additionally, there are 1,042 vacancies in the Indian Forest Service (IFS) and 301 in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), as stated by Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh.

HOME MINISTRY VACANCIES

The Ministry of Home Affairs reported that 1,14,245 posts are vacant in various organisations, including the CRPF, BSF, and Delhi Police. The vacancies are distributed across different groups, with 3,075 in group ‘A’, 15,861 in group ‘B’, and 95,309 in Group ‘C’.

RAILWAY VACANCIES

The Railways have a significant number of vacancies, with over 2.63 lakh posts lying vacant as of July 1, 2023. Of these, 53,178 are in Operational Safety categories. However, a massive recruitment exercise has been completed recently, empanelling 1,39,050 candidates.

TOTAL VACANCIES AND EMPLOYMENT

As of March 1, 2022, there were 9,64,359 total vacant posts in Government departments. The government is working on filling these vacancies in mission mode, conducting Rozgar Melas across the country.

As per the Annual Report of Pay Research Unit (PRU), Department of Expenditure, the number of employees as on March 1, 2022 in grades ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ in the Central Government, are 1,08,099, 2,92,117 and 26,12,934, respectively.

GOVERNMENT JOBS IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS

From April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2023, the UPSC, SSC, and RRBs recommended 4,63,205 candidates for appointment in the Central government. In the first quarter of 2023-24 alone, SSC and RRBs recommended 1,03,196 candidates for appointment.
